So, while Sissieretta Jones might have once been billed America’s first Black superstar (among other 24-year-old Sissieretta Jones sang opera at the newly built Madison Square Garden concert hall to an audience of thousands. Matilda Sissieretta Joyner Jones (January 5, 1868 or 1869 – June 24, 1933) was an American soprano. She sometimes was called "The Black Patti" in reference to Italian opera singer Adelina Patti. Jones' repertoire included grand opera, light opera, and popular music. Sissieretta was born in Portsmouth, Va. in 1868, three years after the end of the Civil War. Her parents, Jeremiah and Henrietta Joyner were former slaves. In 1876, Sissieretta and her parents moved to Rhode Island and settled on Providence’s east side. At the age of 15, Sissieretta married David Richard Jones in 1883.
